Abstract
Arabidopsis thaliana roots grow in a wavy pattern on inclined agar pla tes. This waving behaviour has been interpreted as representing a grav itropism-dependent thigmotropic response. We argue instead that this r oot waving represents primarily a flattened spiral growth pattern resu lting from circumnutation and gravitropism.
