Abstract
Correlated brightness variations are shown to occur in time series of coronal soft X-rays exclusive of prominent active regions, chromospher ic ultraviolet radiation, and the photospheric total solar irradiance corrected for sunspot effects. These temporal correlations suggest tha t upwardly extending magnetic fields may have a large scale impact on the solar atmosphere in addition to their demonstrable role of generat ing localized active regions. The correlations have implications for i mproving and extending solar spectrum variability models.
