In a previous publication the authors have obtained time decay rates f
or solutions to the initial-value problem for the linearized Vlasov eq
uation (in one space dimension) g(t) + vg(x) + 2v f'(v(2))E = 0. Here
E(x) = rho = integral gdv and f(v(2)) greater than or equal to 0 is a
given steady state which is assumed to be sufficiently smooth and stri
ctly decreasing to 0 as \v\ --> infinity. In the present paper, estima
tes are obtained which show some of the previous time decay results to
be optimal.
