The relationship between personality disorders and neurosis tends to b
e nonspecific with Cluster C('anxious') personality disorders overrepr
esented in anxiety and mood disorders. Personality disorders are assoc
iated with poorer outcome of treatment for neuroses. Clinical investig
ators need to go beyond descriptive comorbidity studies to look at the
mechanisms by which personality disorder and personality influence ne
uroses. Several models have been proposed and directions for further i
nvestigation are considered.
