The load-carrying capacity, antiwear and friction reduction properties
of three S-(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl) methyl N, N-dialkyldithiocarbamates
added to a synthetic lubricant (pentaerythritol ester) were evaluated
using a four-ball test machine. The results when compared with those
of tricresyl phosphate (TCP) show that these novel compounds are excel
lent multifunctional additives in pentaerythritol ester and possess be
tter load-carrying capacity, antiwear and friction reduction propertie
s than TCP. The rubbed surfaces were investigated using XPS, AES and E
PMA analyzers, and the antiwear mechanism was discussed.
