Iv. Pokrovskaya et Ea. Sharkov, STUDY OF THE TEMPORAL INTERMITTENCY OF TROPICAL CYCLOGENESIS IN THE PACIFIC-OCEAN BASIN AS APPLIED TO SATELLITE MONITORING PROBLEMS, Earth observation and remote sensing, 14(1), 1996, pp. 17-30
Based on a statistical analysis of remote data about tropical cyclones
in (three active zones of) the Pacific Ocean for 1983-92, represented
in the form of a temporal sequence of events, it is shown experimenta
lly that probabilistic models of the intensity of cyclogenesis (amplit
ude characteristics) in all three active zones may be represented in t
he form of Poisson processes. The Poisson streams are found to be temp
orally intermittent, with significant variations over a 10-year period
. Possible physical reasons for these variations are identified.
