T. Herman et al., PROSTHETIC FITTING AND AMBULATION IN A PARAPLEGIC PATIENT WITH AN ABOVE-KNEE AMPUTATION, Archives of physical medicine and rehabilitation, 76(3), 1995, pp. 290-293
The combination of paraplegia with an above-knee amputation is a compl
ex injury that makes the rehabilitation process difficult. This articl
e describes a case of T12 paraplegia and an above-knee amputation. Aft
er the rehabilitation course, the patient achieved full ambulatory ind
ependence with an ischial containment, contured adducted trochanteric
controlled alignment method (CATCAM) prosthesis and a knee ankle foot
orthosis (KAFO). Difficulties in fitting a functional prosthesis to an
insensate limb and the rehabilitation stages leading to functional am
bulation are reviewed.
