Abstract
This essay explores constructions of arithmetic as departures from the Calculus of Indications of Spencer-Brown. In the course of making the se constructions, we discuss their relationship with the idea of conte xtual interpretations. In this way, the present paper is an investigat ion of the role of the observer in mathematical systems.
