Fibreglass reinforced polyester laminates covered with a gelcoat syste
m are subject to blistering, when immersed in sea water. A mechanical
model, based on the theory of plates, was applied to circular blisters
in the first publication of this series, (Castaing, P., Lemoine, L. a
nd Gourdenne, A., Mechanical modelling of blisters on coated laminates
I - Theoretical aspects, Comp. Struct., 30 (1995) pp. 217-222). An ex
perimental illustration of the model, involving gelcoated polyester la
minate and ageing tests is reported here. Special interest is focused
on the radial rate of blistering, the shape of the blisters, the calcu
lation and the time dependence of the internal pressure and the associ
ated stresses.
