Y. Tanaka et al., OBSERVATION OF CRACK-PROPAGATION IN AMORPHOUS AL88CE2NI9FE CONTAININGNANOSCALE CRYSTALS, Philosophical magazine letters, 71(3), 1995, pp. 179-184
Amorphous alloys containing nanoscale crystals have been deformed in s
itu in a high-voltage electron microscope. Acceleration in the nucleat
ion and growth of nanoscale crystals has been found at a crack tip dur
ing ageing under stress. It has also been revealed that the nanoscale
crystals are free from lattice defects after deformation to cracking.
These observations suggest that the presence of non-deformable nanosca
le crystals plays an important role in the strengthening of amorphous
alloys.
