Polymeric matrices modified by rare-earth cations show interesting pho
toluminescence properties. Time resolved spectroscopy of poly(ethylene
) oxide, PEO, and poly(propylene) oxide, PPO, electrolytes containing
different concentrations of Eu3+ and Nd3+ ions is reported. Lifetimes
regarding the main transitions of the luminescence spectra (D-5(0)-->F
-7(1,2) for the EU(3+) ion, P-2(3/2)-->I-4(9/2,11/2) and D-4(3/2,5/2)
--> I-4(11/2) for the Nd3+ case) were measured and are presented as a
function of temperature in the range of 13 to 310 K. The order of magn
itude of the values obtained at room temperature (approximate to 500 m
u s) may constitute further indication of the technological optical po
tential of those polymeric materials.
