Abstract
We explore explanations for the disproportionate rise in costs for adm inistration relative to instruction in American higher education. Draw ing on existing literature, economic assumptions, and organization the ory, we generate propositions specifying the particular location and c auses of spiraling costs and develop explanations that focus on the po sition, professionalization, and power of administrators.
