Polyamide-6, PA-6, polyamide-6.6, PA-6.6, and polyamide-6.10, PA-6.10
in blends with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene-copolymer ABS, were inv
estigated by DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and WAXS (wide an
gle X-ray scattering) in order to clarify their crystallization behavi
or. With an increasing content of ABS there is a decrease of the cryst
allization and melting temperature of the polyamides measured. This is
a result of an increasing disturbance of the spherulitic crystallizat
ion caused by a kinetic hindrance of lamellar growth at the interface
between PA and ABS and the resulting formation of smaller and/or less
perfect crystallites. The hindrance becomes more and more distinct, th
e bigger the surface of the PA phase in proportion to the content of p
olyamide in the blend is. In blends of PA-6.6 with ABS and PA-6.10 wit
h ABS fractionated crystallization is observed.
