The low activity spectrometric gamma-gamma borehole logging tool devel
oped previously for the coal mining industry was tried in an iron ore
deposit in 100 mm dia holes. The tool has an external diameter of 60 m
m and uses a 1.8 MBq Cs-137 gamma-ray source with a 37x75 mm NaI(Tl) s
cintillation detector. The tool is able to delineate the iron ore depo
sit and predict its grade. This was demonstrated in three boreholes su
rrounded by iron in the range 54-59% and with a standard deviation of
+/- 0.9% (1sigma).
