A cellular automaton model of a middle European beech forest mosaic cy
cle is used to demonstrate the essential role placed by memory in a sp
atially extended artificial ecology. The emergent spatial structure is
shown to be fundamentally dependent on the amplification of local int
eractions by the mechanism of memory.
