The magnetic coupling in a [Dy(35 Angstrom)/Er(11 Angstrom)] X 90 supe
rlattice has been studied by neutron scattering experiments and magnet
ization measurements. Basal plane helical ordering, coherent through i
nitially paramagnetic Er layers, appears in the Dy layers for a temper
ature close to the ordering temperature of bulk Dy. At low temperature
a ferromagnetic arrangement between the Dy layers is observed, instea
d of antiferromagnetic stacking in superlattices with thicker Er layer
