Single-phase compounds of Y2Fe17-xGaxC2 with rhombohedral Th2Zn17-type
structure were prepared by melt-spinning for x = 0 and 1 and by are m
elting for 2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 6. The subs
titution of Ga in Y2Fe17C2 results in a linear increase in the unit ce
ll volume, but the Fe moment decreases linearly from 2.05 mu(B) for x
= 0 to 1.3 mu(B) for x = 6. The Curie temperature T-C decreases slowly
until x = 2, and then drops at a rapid rate with increasing Ga concen
tration x.
