The Sm-Fe exchange field and the two main crystalline electric field p
arameters A(2)(0) and A(4)(0) in Sm2Fe17Nx (0 less than or equal to x
less than or equal to 3.0) are determined by analyzing the available e
xperimental data. It is deduced that the Sm-Fe exchange field decrease
s and the absolute value of A(2)(0) increases linearly with increasing
N concentration. The decrease in the Sm-Fe exchange field is discusse
d in terms of the hybridization interactions of Sm 5d states with Fe 3
d and N 2p states.
