Abstract
We review some recent observations pertaining to the rare-earth magnet ism in high-T-c superconductors and related layered cuprates. These in clude crystal-field phenomena, an Ising-like antiferromagnetism, and m anifestations of interaction of 4f electrons with spins and charges re sponsible for superconductivity residing in the CuO2 planes.
