The influence of a staggered magnetic field on states involving one an
d two holes in the one-dimensional t-J model has been discussed by usi
ng a variational wave function based on the string or spin-bag picture
. Results have been compared with numerical data obtained by means of
the Lanczos method and reasonable agreement has been found which indic
ates that properties of the system in the case of small doping may be
interpreted in terms of an effective Hilbert space.
