Rk. Gupta et al., BRAIN METABOLITE CHANGES ON IN-VIVO PROTON MAGNETIC-RESONANCE SPECTROSCOPY IN CHILDREN WITH CONGENITAL HYPOTHYROIDISM, The Journal of pediatrics, 126(3), 1995, pp. 389-392
Localized in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging w
ere performed in five children with untreated congenital hypothyroidis
m to look for biochemical markers of abnormal myelin and neuronal deve
lopment, The patients had high levels of choline-containing compounds,
which returned to normal with euthyroidism. These metabolic alteratio
ns may reflect blocks in myelin maturation that are reversible by thyr
oid hormone replacement throughout childhood.
