Abstract
European guidelines for quality assurance in mammography screening hav e recently been published, and include a protocol for the restriction of patient dose. This protocol is different from current UK practice i n which the mean glandular dose to the standard breast is estimated. D ata collected from mammography systems in the UK Breast Screening Prog ramme (UK BSP) have been used to estimate the entrance surface doses f or 45 mm PMMA that would be expected for each system if the European p rotocol had been followed. Almost all the systems in the UK BSP will m eet the guidelines on dose restriction in the European protocol.
