Abstract
The crystal structure of 1,4-dilithiumbutadiene 2 obtained in the reac tion of tolane with an iron(II) hydridolithium complex shows that 2 is a dimer with four lithium atoms, forming a distorted tetrahedron with short Li-Li and Li-C distances. Implication for the reaction of the i ron-lithium complex with dinitrogen is discussed.
