Two cases of sacral radiculomyelitis of presumably viral origin with a
cute urinary retention as the first manifestation are reported. Lumbar
puncture was performed because of the absence of urologic abnormaliti
es in the first case and because of delayed apparition of meningeal sy
mptoms in the second. In both patients, cerebrospinal fluid analysis e
stablished the diagnosis of lymphocytic meningitis. The clinical pictu
re of sacral radiculomyelitis is often incomplete, and acute urinary r
etention is sometimes the only manifestation. Sacral radiculomyelitis
should be routinely considered among the causes of acute neurological
urinary retention, despite its low incidence in pediatric patients.
