Based upon reviews of the literature and observations from the First a
nd Second International Congresses on Eclectic and Integrative Psychot
herapy, this article discusses three uniformity myths and appear to be
widespread in the field: (1) that all psychotherapies have equivalent
outcome; (2) that all theories (or systems) of psychotherapy are equa
lly sound; and (3) that cultural homogeneity exists for all eclectic a
nd integrative psychotherapists and their clients, encouraging the dis
semination of Western theories to psychotherapists from other traditio
ns and cultures. Each of these myths and its implications for eclectic
and integrative psychotherapy are discussed, and a range of suggestio
ns for dealing with each myth are presented.
