Mb. Harvey et Mb. Keck, A NEW SPECIES OF ISCHNOCNEMA (ANURA, LEPTODACTYLIDAE) FROM HIGH ELEVATIONS IN THE ANDES OF CENTRAL BOLIVIA, Herpetologica, 51(1), 1995, pp. 56-66
A new species of Ischnocnema is described from high elevations in the
Andes of central Bolivia. The new taxon occurs at the highest elevatio
n reported for the genus and is allopatric from other species of Ischn
ocnema; it is separated from its geographically closest congener, I. q
uixensis, by more than 800 km. The new species differs most notably fr
om congeners by the presence of subconical to round subarticular and s
upernumerary tubercles on the feet, terminal discs, a flesh-colored ty
mpanum and coccygeal stripe, and a high head width to length ratio. Ma
les of I. quixensis and the new taxon have relatively larger tympana t
han females. Frogs of the genus Ischnocnema share distinctive hand mor
phology, many morphometric characteristics, eye morphology and colorat
ion, and banding of the lips and limbs.
