Ra. Nussbaum et Cj. Raxworthy, REVIEW OF THE SCINCINE GENUS PSEUDOACONTIAS BARBOZA-DU-BOCAGE (REPTILIA, SQUAMATA, SCINCIDAE) OF MADAGASCAR, Herpetologica, 51(1), 1995, pp. 91-99
The monotypic scincine genus Pseudoacontias Barboza du Bocage was know
n until now from only a single specimen, the holotype of P. madagascar
iensis described more than 100 years ago. That specimen, from an unkno
wn specific locality, was lost in the fire that destroyed the Museu Bo
cage, Lisbon. Recently a second specimen of the genus was collected in
Marojejy Reserve in the northeastern rainforests of Madagascar. This
specimen represents a new species of the genus and differs from P. mad
agascariensis mainly in having small, toeless hind limbs; P. madagasca
riensis was described as completely limbless. Herein, the meager liter
ature on Pseudoacontias is summarized, the new species described in de
tail, and the genus rediagnosed.
