A novel self-assembled NLO(Nonlinear Optical) polymer film constructed
from a structurally controlled, cage-like crosslinking polymer(SCCP)
and chromophore ((S)-(-)-1-(4)-Nitrophenyl-2-pyrro-lidinemethanol) emb
edded in SCCP has been prepared by ''sol-gel process''. The cage size
of SCCP was designed according to the molecular size of NPP so that ea
ch cage could trap one NPP molecule. The film is uniform and transpare
nt when the molar ratio of chromophore/organosilicon spacer was 1:1 wi
thout any phase separation. It's chi((2))(coefficient of second harmon
ic generation) is 3.0x10(-8)e.s.u. measured by IR dichroism. The struc
ture has been investigated by AFM (atomic force microscopy), IR, solub
ility test. The result indicated that the chromophore molecules NPP wa
s largely trapped within the cages of the crosslinking polymers at mol
ecular level.
