M. Kagami et al., 2 CASES OF PRIAPISM CAUSED BY LONG-TERM ANTIPSYCHOTIC ADMINISTRATION, Japanese journal of psychiatry and neurology, 48(4), 1994, pp. 865-867
We report two cases of priapism that developed in patients with chroni
c schizophrenia after long-term use of antipsychotic drugs. Almost all
cases of this type of priapism reported previously have developed wit
hin a month after the start of administration of the drugs responsible
. However, the present patients had taken a variety of antipsychotics
for a long period, and they developed priapism more than one year afte
r the introduction of the causative drugs, which were perphenazine, th
iothixene and propericiazine. There are few previous reports of priapi
sm related to each of these drugs. The present cases suggest that pria
pism may develop at any time after introduction of a variety of antips
ychotics.
