The effect of Ti addition in the range 0 to 0.2 wt% on the tensile str
ength and elongation at rupture of the Zn 10 wt% Al, Zn 25 wt% Al, and
Zn 40 wt% Al alloys is examined. The considerable increase of elongat
ion is observed due to the grain refinement of the structure. The sign
ificant decrease of dimensional changes in the Zn 25 wt% Al alloy afte
r the Ti addition is observed. Light microscopy studies show mainly th
e refinement of ZnAl solid solution dendrites. Examinations of the che
mical composition of intermetallic phases located in the centres of re
fined dendrites state the presence of the binary TiZn3 phase and a ter
nary Zn-Al-Ti phase, similar to Ti(Zn(x)Al1-x)3 and (Ti(x)Zn1-x)5Al11
phases in chemical composition.
