Abstract
Changes in serotonin (5-HT) immunoreactivity in axonal terminals in CA 1 region of the rat hippocampus were studied during cerebral ischemia, with the immunogold procedure for electron microscopy. An increased 5 -HT-specific gold labelling immediately after ischemia was observed, S ix, twelve, and twenty four hours after ischemia 5-HT immunoreactivity was diminished. We thus provide an immunocytochemical evidence that c erebral ischemia is accompanied by a rapid increase of 5-HT release in the hippocampus, followed by 5-HT downregulation in the later post-is chemic periods.
