Alcohol-related beliefs of children in grades 1, 4, and 7 were examine
d to identify any age-related differences in the content and the salie
nce of positive versus negative cognitions. The results indicate gener
al developmental trends for positive as well as negative alcohol effec
ts, with the older children scoring significantly higher on both. desp
ite the increase in positive expectancies with age, in all three grade
s the effects that children spontaneously attributed to alcohol rather
than other liquids were overwhelmingly negative.
