Thin magnetized Fe/W(110) films were investigated by spin resolving ph
otoelectron spectroscopy with unpolarized VUV-tight as well as by magn
etic circular dichroism in photoemission using left and right circular
ly polarized synchrotron radiation. The spin resolved intensities and
polarization curve directly reflect the majority and minority spin cha
racter of the valence bands along the Sigma direction. In contrast, th
e asymmetry in the photoelectron intensities depending on the helicity
of the incoming synchrotron radiation is caused by spin-orbit in comb
ination with exchange interaction. By determination of the spin polari
zation of photoelectrons and the magnetic circular dichroism one can,
in principle, obtain complementary information about the electronic an
d magnetic properties of the iron film.
