Abstract
alpha(critical) is defined as the fraction of a computational task tha t must be executed in parallel for the theoretical peak performance fo r two parallel processors to be equal. Values Of alpha(critical) are g iven for a number of contemporary high performance computing machines. ($) over bar alpha(critical), the practical parallelization break-eve n fraction, is defined and discussed.
