The regularities of ion-photon emission in continuum spectra observed
under keV energy reactive ion bombardment of metal surfaces have been
studied experimentally. It has been shown that the intensity of contin
uum radiation and in some cases even the shape of the optical spectrum
are determined by the kind of bombarding ion. The spectra of the radi
ation under investigation were shown to contain important information
on the relative reactivity of different metal atoms in heterogeneous r
eactions such as surface oxidation. A technique for the application of
continuum radiation for determining the parameters of the distributio
n of implanted foreign atoms is proposed.
