The study of almost 300 fossil fishes from the Messinian marine diatom
aceous marls of the Sierra de Columbares, near Murcia (Spain) leads on
e to add six more laxa to the faunal list of this locality that includ
es at least sixteen species of teleosts. The meso- and/or bathypelagic
fishes (Myctophidae and Paralepididae) together make up 87.8% of this
fish-fauna, in spite of the fact that the sedimentation seems to have
taken place in shallow waters.
