Abstract
To reduce cold ischemic injury of the heart by supplying sufficient ox ygen to the heart during preservation, we have developed a new cavitar y, two-layer (University of Wisconsin solution/perfluorochemical) cold storage method. The oxygenation of the heart during preservation by t his method allows ATP production within the graft and makes it possibl e to extend preservation time up to 48 hr in the heterotopic rat heart transplant model.
