We show that the angular resolution Delta phi and time resolution Delt
a t of neutron time-of-flight spectrometers can be determined accurate
ly by measuring the scattering spectrum of superfluid He-4 at low temp
erature. The method is used to determine Delta phi and Delta t of the
IRIS spectrometer at ISIS (UK), yielding the values (FWHM) Delta phi =
0.118 rad (6.8 degrees) and Delta t = 212 mu s, and to reinterpret th
e results of Blagoveshchenskii et al., showing that their measured lin
ewidths for superfluid He-4 can be ascribed solely to the effect of th
e angular resolution of their time-of-flight spectrometer.
