Abstract
The two-mode semiconductor laser rate equations are generalized to acc ount for the diffusion of free carriers. Using the diffusion coefficie nt as a control parameter we analyze the competition between small-sca le and large-scale gratings in the laser dynamics. Many solutions beca me unstable as the diffusion coefficient decreases.
