Aj. Carter et J. Vanheerden, AORTIC THROMBOSIS IN A DOG WITH GLOMERULONEPHRITIS, Journal of the South African Veterinary Medical Association, 65(4), 1994, pp. 189-192
A Bearded Collie was presented with clinical signs of intermittent wea
kness, intermittent pain in the back leg and a bilateral absence of th
e femoral pulse. Further diagnostic investigations revealed proteinuri
a, hypoproteinaemia, hyperlipidaemia and azotaemia. A quantitative est
imation of the proteinuria using a protein/creatinine ratio indicated
a loss of 483 mg kg-1 of protein per day. A large caudal aortic thromb
osis was demonstrated by means of non-selective angiography and ultras
onographic examination. Autopsy confirmed an extensive aortic thrombus
extending from the level of the fourth lumbar vertebra to include bot
h iliac and femoral arteries at the level of the stifle joints. A larg
e thrombus, 4 cm in length, was also found in the pulmonary artery. Hi
stopathological examination of the kidneys revealed a subacute to chro
nic membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis.
