The photoelectric current is calculated on the basis of the Green's fu
nction matching method. Peak widths and intensities of bulk and surfac
e states are studied in dependence on electron and hole lifetimes. For
Cu(111) it is shown that the ratio of peak intensities of both types
of states yield information on electron inverse lifetime which can par
ticularly be used for very low energies (<10 eV), where the peak width
analysis for studying lifetimes fails.
