Urinary tract infection is a significant problem in diabetes mellitus.
The pathogenesis and management of bacteriuria and uncomplicated urin
ary tract infections are reviewed in this article. Upper tract infecti
on is more common in diabetic patients; special considerations regardi
ng pyelonephritis in the diabetic patient are covered. Complicated upp
er tract infections, such as intrarenal abscess, urinary tract emphyse
ma, perinephric abscess, papillary necrosis, and metastatic infection
from the urinary tract are frequently seen in diabetics. The pathogene
sis and management of these entities in the setting of diabetes mellit
us are also reviewed in this article.
