The reaction of acetone-2-thenoylhydrazone (ath) with LnCl(3).nH(2)O y
ields compounds of the composition [Ln(ath)(3)Cl-2]Cl while complexes
of the type [Ln(thdth)(2)Cl-2]Cl [where thdth = 6-tetramethyl-3,5-hept
anedione-2-thenoylhydrazone; LN = La(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III),
Eu(III), Gd(III), Tb(III) and Dy(III)] have been synthesized through t
he metal template effect. The complexes have been characterized by ele
mental analysis, magnetic, IR, electronic and emission spectral studie
s. The unit lattice of [Tb(thdth)(2)Cl-2]Cl belongs to tetragonal crys
tal lattice having one molecule per unit lattice.
