M. Lindeman et al., UNDERESTIMATION OR OVERESTIMATION OF SELF - PERSON VARIABLES AND SELF-ASSESSMENT ACCURACY IN WORK SETTINGS, Journal of social behavior and personality, 10(1), 1995, pp. 123-134
The effect of intelligence, length of service, age, self-esteem, motiv
ation and gender on self-assesment accuracy was analyzed in natural or
ganizational settings. It was hypothesized that I) accurate subjects h
ave higher intelligence and 2) long service, that 3) overestimators ha
ve high self-esteem and 4) high motivation, and that 5) mens self-asse
ssments are more positive than women's. Ninety-four employees in a ser
vice organization assessed themselves as a part of an in-house personn
el selection process which consisted of supervisory assessments and ps
ychological tests. The results supported hypotheses 3, 4, and 5, bur n
ot I and 2. In addition, it turned out that young subjects overevaluat
ed themselves more often than other subjects.
