Cd. Keith et al., A POLARIZED SOLID HE-3 TARGET FOR NEUTRON TRANSMISSION EXPERIMENTS, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section A, Accelerators, spectrometers, detectors and associated equipment, 357(1), 1995, pp. 34-39
We describe the construction and operation of a solid He-3 polarized n
uclear target which we have used for measurements of the spin dependen
ce of the n-He-3 interaction at MeV energies. The target, which contai
ns 0.4 mole of He-3 was polarized to 38% at 12 mK in a held of 7 T. Th
e target is suitable for nuclear physics measurements which are insens
itive to the large magnetic field and produce beam heating of tenths o
f microwatts, We discuss refinements and paths to improved solid He-3
targets at higher polarizations and lower fields.
