The ability of the molecular metal oxides derived from the Keggin anio
n [PW12O40](3-) to accommodate magnetic ions at specific sites, giving
rise to polymetallic clusters with increasing spin nuclearities is di
scussed. Examples of magnetic clusters with three, four and nine metal
ions exhibiting ferromagnetic exchange couplings or a coexistence of
ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings are reported.
