Two new ellagitannins, named syzyginins A and B, were isolated from th
e leaves of clove (Syzygium aromaticum.). Syzyginin A was characterize
d as O-galloyl-4,6-(S)-tergalloyl-beta-D-glucopyranose. Syzyginin B wa
s a novel hydrolysable tannin possessing a new aromatic acyl group, sy
zygyl, which has a dibenzo-1,4-dioxin structure probably derived from
a tergalloyl group. Structures were established on the basis of chemic
al and spectroscopic evidence. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
