Distinctive profiles of neuropsychological impairment and neurophysiol
ogical abnormalities exist in schizophrenia. At the cognitive level, t
hese impairments appear to involve various aspects of working, semanti
c, and secondary memory. Some of these deficits may be unresponsive to
neuroleptic medication. Functional neuroimaging has indicated a patte
rn of cerebral frontal hypoactivity and temporal hyperactivity consist
ent with the cognitive findings. Taken together, these results may beg
in to account for the frequent and often severe morbidity associated w
ith the disorder.
