We present the results of a spectroscopic study carried our on films o
f poly-p-phenylene sulfide (PPS) doped with FeCl3 in different solvent
s. The doping and dedoping processes have been followed by electronic,
infrared, and Raman spectra both in a dry atmosphere and in the prese
nce of moisture. For the first time in doped PPS two strong Raman band
s have been observed at frequencies close to those of the infrared-act
ivated vibrational modes. Several other weaker Raman lines, originated
by a breakdown of the selection rules, have been shown to be selectiv
ely activated in the ionized form. These new data, when combined with
the results of the infrared and electronic studies, provide a complete
picture of the electronic and vibrational structure of doped PPS. Thi
s allows also the assignment of those bands which are originated by ch
emically modified PPS.
