A new scintillation counting system which allows radioactive effluent
to be monitored continuously has been proposed. The effluent is immedi
ately solidified on a glass-fiber support tape by continuously droppin
g small amounts of molten paraffin scintillator onto it. Since the pre
pared sample holds the sequence of the elution, it can be measured rep
eatedly and stored. The technique provides high counting efficiency, g
ood reproducibility in measurement and no memory effect without using
a counting vial. A counting efficiency of about 15% is obtainable for
H-3, 85% for C-14 and 95% for P-32 With a specialized scintillation co
unter which has been constructed so as to move the solid support sampl
e with a constant speed between two slits on which each photomultiplie
r tube is closely mounted.
